Referral program: how it works, what you earn, and who can use it

If you use Avalw Shield and someone asks you about it, you can earn a commission every time they buy a license through your referral link. Here's everything you need to know.

How it works

Every personal Shield account gets a unique referral link. You share it however you want: in a conversation, on social media, in a blog post, by email. When someone clicks your link, creates an account, and buys a license, you earn a commission on that sale.

That's it. No application process, no approval needed, no minimum followers or audience. You just share your link and earn when people buy.

Commission tiers

The more people you refer, the higher your commission rate. There are four tiers, and you move up automatically as your referral count grows.

Level 1 is your direct commission: someone buys through your link, you earn a percentage of the sale.

Level 2 is your indirect commission: if someone you referred also refers others, you earn a smaller percentage on those sales too. This rewards people who bring in active referrers, not just one-time buyers.

When do I get paid?

Commissions go through three stages:

1. Pending the sale happened, but the buyer hasn't activated their license yet. Your commission is recorded but not available.
2. Cleared the buyer activated their license, or 14 days passed since purchase. Your commission is now available for payout.
3. Paid you requested a payout and we processed it.

The reason commissions start as "pending" is simple: if a buyer requests a refund before activating (which is allowed within 14 days), the sale is reversed and no commission is owed. Once the license is activated or 14 days pass without a refund, your commission is cleared and available.

Why is referral only for personal accounts?

The referral program is available exclusively to personal accounts. If you have a company account, you won't see the referral section in your dashboard. This is intentional, and here's why.

Personal accounts and company accounts serve different purposes. A personal user buys Shield for themselves, uses it on their own device, and might recommend it to friends, colleagues, or their audience. The referral program is built for that: organic, word-of-mouth recommendations from real users.

Companies have different needs. A company buying Shield for 50 or 500 employees isn't doing word-of-mouth referrals. They need volume licensing, custom onboarding, deployment support, and dedicated pricing. That's a business relationship, not a referral.

Mixing the two would create problems. A company using a referral link to purchase 200 licenses at the same commission rate as someone recommending Shield to a friend doesn't make sense. The volumes, the relationship, and the expectations are completely different. That's why companies get their own program with terms that match what they actually need.

What counts as a referral?

A referral is counted when someone:

1. Clicks your referral link or enters your referral code when creating their account
2. Creates a Shield account
3. Purchases at least one license

The referral is tied to their account permanently. If they buy more licenses later, you earn commission on those too (as long as they're on a personal account).

Can I refer myself?

No. The referral program is designed for recommending Shield to other people. Using your own referral link to purchase a license for yourself is not permitted and will not generate a commission.

Examples

You're a Starter (11%) and someone buys a $199 license through your link.
Your commission: $21.89. It becomes available once they activate or after 14 days.

You're at Growth tier (15%) and one of your referrals also refers someone.
You earn 15% on your direct referrals and 5% on their referrals. If their referral buys a $199 license, you earn $9.95 from that Level 2 sale.

You reach 100 referrals and move to Pro (20%).
From this point, all new sales through your link earn 20%. Previous commissions stay at the rate they were earned at.
